In 2015, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America’s Diverse Fish and Wildlife Resources made a suggestion that a group analyze the impact of societal changes on the relevancy of fish and wildlife conservation. After this analysis, the group would make recommendations on how agencies can transform to engage and serve broader constituencies. This work established the foundation for the Fish and Wildlife Relevancy Roadmap.

In 2018 and 2019, development of the Relevancy Roadmap was coordinated by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) and the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI). The text of the Roadmap - including strategies, steps, and tactics for overcoming barriers to greater public relevancy - was crafted by a diverse group of over 60 people from state, provincial, and federal fish and wildlife agencies; non-government organizations; and the private sector. Upon completion, the Roadmap was adopted at the AFWA annual meeting in September 2019.

In 2020, this site was created so that individuals can easily access the Roadmap and begin implementing it.
