Getting Started with the Relevancy Roadmap

The Roadmap is organized into 5 Categories: agency culture, agency capacity, constituent culture, constituent capacity, and political and legal constraints. Each category has between 2 and 5 specific relevancy barriers that agencies must overcome to engage and serve broader constituencies.

Before fully diving into individual barriers, get familiar with the concept of the Roadmap by visiting Background, where you can read the Roadmap’s Introduction, Executive Summary, and more, like how the Roadmap was developed and how to use it. Once comfortable with what the Roadmap is, visit the Relevancy Category links above to explore the “map” view of each Relevancy Category. Within the maps, review the full list of barriers, strategies, and tactics for each category to find what is appropriate for your agency to tackle.

After exploring the barriers within the Roadmap, each user will need to select their own starting point and path plus an implementation speed based on their own characteristics. Once agency leadership has reached a decision on which barrier(s) and strategy(ies) to take on, staff responsible for implementation should review and discuss the strategies, steps, and tactics listed in the Roadmap. Read How to Use the Roadmap to learn more about getting started.

Practitioners can also use the online Conservation Relevancy Community to access more resources and communicate with others working on conservation relevancy. All are encouraged to share resources, success stories, challenges, and tools during their journey with the Relevancy Roadmap. To be successful, the recommendations, strategies, and tactics included in this document must be applied in real-world conditions and refined according to the results they produce. Share your results with the community today!
